The Costarican flag is composed by 5 bands with 3 colors placed horizontally. Red in the center between two white bands and those followed by two blue bands. This flag was designed November 27th of 1906 as well as the national coat of arms.
This design was done by Mrs. Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno, First Lady of the first president of Costa Rica, José Maria Castro Madriz. Inspired on the flag of France.

When the flag is presented with the emblem we call it “pabellón nacional” this flag is used at schools, government facilities and the presidential house. For other civil activities and parades we use the flag without the coat of arms.

Each color of the flag represent different things:
Blue: the sky.
White: the peace.
Red: the love for life and the blood spilled for liberty.
The bands have a proportion of 1:1:2:1:1
Previous to this flag Costa Rica had a design given by Spain in 1821 declared by Carlos III.. After that Costa Rica adopted the flag from the United Provinces of Central America in 1824.
